Aliens and UFOs: The theories and the facts

Editor's note: This highly controversial subject is sure to generate a vast amount of diverse and intense opinions. It is not DTT's desire to create division in the body of Christ, but to present current theories and issues against biblical facts for your consideration. Although this article contains information that we believe to be possible, it may be totally incorrect. Well respected Christian scholars have taken both sides of this issue. In any event, it will be hard for some people to accept. Our intention is to alert Christians to the possibility of what might happen and not be deceived if it does.

As long as people have been able to look into the skies, they have witnessed phenomena that they can't understand –  comets, meteor showers, lightning, and eclipses before science offered explanations – along with today's yet unsolved mystery: unidentified flying objects, commonly known as UFOs. Drawings of UFOs have been found in the hieroglyphics of ancient caves, and sightings have been recorded for centuries, if not millennia. It is a topic that generates deep-wrought opinions and controversy around the world.

The May, 2001 cover of Popular Mechanics. A rash of recent publications on UFOs is helping to make the idea of UFOs and aliens more credible to an increasingly accepting society.

People have long pondered the possibility of little green men from distant planets who might hold the secrets of advanced technology, cures for cancer, and hope for mankind. Over the years, especially in recent months, there has been an increasing number of mainstream media that are treating the UFO phenomenon as credible. Children and adults alike are being desensitized to freely accept the idea of aliens as friendly "big brothers" who just want to get to know us better. The traditional alien face shape typified by the large bald head, smooth gray/green skin, tiny expressionless mouth, and wide black slanted eyes is seen everywhere – TV, movies, posters, T-shirts, books, and bumper stickers. Interestingly, the alien eye shape has shown up in recent years in other areas, too, such as the head and tail lights of cars, stereo speakers, and especially, sunglasses. We are, in fact, getting quite comfortable with "that look."

    The Roswell event

The July 8, 1947, front page of the Roswell Daily Record

The alien/UFO craze became a public obsession after the Roswell, NM, incident over fifty years ago, and received an enormous boost in credibility when Lt. Col. Philip Corso published the book The Day After Roswell in 1997. Corso was a respected member of President Eisenhower's National Security Council and former head of the Foreign Technology Desk at the US Army's Research & Development Department in the 1960s, and after retiring he joined Senator Strom Thurman (R-SC) as his military advisor. During his tenure as head of the Foreign Technology Desk he claims to have reverse-engineered alien technology recovered from the 1947 Roswell crash to provide the science for integrated circuit chips, fiber optics, lasers, super-tenacity fibers and other technology that we take for granted today. Says Corso in his introduction, "In Roswell in 1947, the landing of a flying saucer was no fantasy. It was real, the military wasn't able to prevent it, and this time the authorities didn't want a repeat of "War of the Worlds."

Corso claims he was not at Roswell in 1947, but did see the body of one of the aliens as it was shipped through Fort Riley, Kansas, where then Major Corso was the post duty officer on July 6, 1947. Five lowboys, supposedly carrying landing-gear-assembly struts for P51s, stopped overnight from Fort Bliss, Texas, in route to Air Material Command at Wright Field in Ohio. Some of the crates, however, strangely wound up in the Veterinarians building. As he was making his rounds past the Veterinarians building, the sentry pulled Corso into the building and showed him some thirty crates the truck drivers had said had come from an accident in New Mexico. Opening one that had obviously been opened before, Corso went into shock:

The contents, enclosed in a thick glass container, were submerged in a thick light blue liquid.... It was a four-foot human-shaped figure with arms, bizarre-looking six-fingered hands – I didn't see a thumb – thin legs and feet, and an oversized incandescent lightbulb-shaped head that looked like it was floating over a balloon-shaped gondola for a chin....

Needless to say, Corso's book has resulted in extreme controversy. Some people have labeled it as a fraud primarily because this near ninety-year old author didn't get all the dates of the events right which had occurred fifty years before, and were peripheral to the main topic of alien technology. To the accusation of fraud, Corso's supporters ask why? Why would a distinguished officer desire to discredit his family's name in the last years of his life? He died the year after the book was published. There is simply no motive to commit such an outrageous fraud.

Although Corso said he was not involved, 12 people worked with President Truman to cover up the event in the years following Roswell. The cover-up eventually became known as Majestic, or Majestic-12, or MJ-12. Corso claimed that the event was kept secret at the time because release of the information would have created panic. But the Majestic group did want the "truth" to eventually get out, so they started leaking information. The MJ-12 allowed "disclosure of some of the most far-fetched information, whether true or not, because it would help create a climate of public attitude that would be able to accept the existence of extraterrestrial life without a general sense of panic," wrote Corso. There is overwhelming evidence that the Majestic project really did exist and, assuming they are not fraudulent, the Majestic Documents are gradually being exposed.

The campaign to reveal the "secrets"

On May 9, 2001, UFO excitement was re-ignited as "20 witnesses from the American military, intelligence services, and scientific establishments gave their testimony to start a campaign which they hope will force the government to investigate the UFO phenomenon," according to an Independent News article. Investigations such as the Air Force's Project Blue Book have already gathered a vast amount of information. From 1947 to 1969 it investigated 12,618 sightings, and found explanations for all but 701. Steven Greer, head of The Disclosure Project, a non-profit research group dedicated to "working to fully disclose the facts about UFO's, extraterrestrial intelligence, and classified advanced energy and propulsion systems" is the force behind the current campaign.

In a Fox News report on May 10, Greer commented that "Technologies connected to UFOs and extra-terrestrial vehicles, if declassified and used for peaceful energy generation and propulsion, would solve the looming energy crisis definitively, would end global warming, would correct the environmental challenges that the earth is facing." That sounds like the type of conquering Messiah that the Jewish people were looking for to save their world, too. But Jesus came and washed feet and died on a cross – not quite what they had in mind. Once again, misplaced hope will likely lead many people into deception as their expectations are based on their desires and hopes rather than on the word of God. Satan is always more than willing to supply substitutes for Christ.

So who are these little gray camera-shy creatures who dart around the skies in shiny saucers, plucking select individuals to study in their examining rooms? And what stance should Christians take on the subject? Are there alien civilizations living in this enormous universe which God created? Only He knows for sure, but a diligent study of scripture points to the likely answer.

    What does the Bible say?

There is only one God (Isaiah 45:21-22), and He created the heavens and the earth, and all living things (Genesis 1). He made the stars for the sole purpose of giving light to the earth, to govern the day and the night on the earth, and to separate light from darkness on the earth (Gen. 1:16b-18), not for housing other beings. The earth was the focus of His attention, around which his other creations revolved.

Eve was the mother of all the living (Gen. 3:20). Through the sin of Adam and Eve (Gen. 3; Rom. 5:12), mankind had need of a Savior (John 3:3). Jesus, God's only son, became the sacrifice that would redeem mankind (John 3:16). God's only provision for sin, Jesus, came in a human body (John 1:14) to earth. God's plan for redemption was completed on the cross (John 19:30). The Word of God was written for humans, and nothing else can be added to it (Rev. 22:18-19). The new Jerusalem where Christians will abide with God forever, is created for humans (Rev. 21:3). One God, one plan, one Word, one people.

If God has indeed created other beings, then we can assume several things:

    1. Either they are not capable of sin, or God didn't provide a plan of salvation for them, because Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6) and He was sent to redeem humans
    2. If they did sin, God would have to contradict His Word and provide another way to be saved, or let them be eternally lost in sin which would discredit Psalm 145:13b, "The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made."
    3. In eternity they will not live in the new Jerusalem with God, because He made it for humans
    4. They would have to use a human Bible which wouldn't pertain to their situation.

For the spiritually-minded, scripture discredits the notion that aliens are a race from a faraway planet. And for those who prefer to operate in a scientific realm, mathematical logic discounts the possibility as well. The nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is 4.5 light years away. Even if extraterrestrials traveled a million miles a day, it would take 70,000 years at over 41,000 mph just to make the journey to earth! That fact alone suggests that these creatures are not constrained by time or aging the way humans are.  If they aren't "space men," who or what are they, and where do they come from? Perhaps thousands of ludicrous beliefs exist, but we will attempt to briefly present a few of the more rational explanations.

Normal scientific phenomena. Most alien and UFO sightings can be explained through scientific means, such as the majority of those investigated during the 22 year Project Blue Book research. Airplanes, helicopters, birds, flashes of light, and swamp gas were often to blame. But Corso says Project Blue Book served a dual purpose. "It would serve the public relations purposes by allowing individuals to file reports on flying disk sightings. While the Blue Book field officers attributed commonplace explanations to the reported sightings,... the most intriguing sightings that had the highest probability of being truly unidentified objects would be bumped upstairs to the working group for dissemination to the authorized agencies carrying on the research."

A figment of the imagination. If people want to see something badly enough, there is a good chance they will. Hallucinations could stem solely from a person's own desire, or could also be mental images implanted from demonic forces in the spirit world as a way of drawing someone away from the Truth.

Fallen angels disguised as aliens. The traditional view of demons is that they are fallen angels driven out of heaven who roam the earth to deceive and destroy God's people. Demons are spiritual beings who prefer to inhabit the living body of a person or animal. There are two classes of demons in scripture: One class whose abode is the air and earth and are free to war against the saints (Eph. 6:12), and others who are imprisoned in the Abyss (Jude 6; 2 Pet. 2:4; Luke 8:31; Rev. 9:1-3). Some people believe that demons can pose as aliens for various purposes, such as to discredit God's Word, provide false hope for mankind, or even to create fear. Although it is not clear whether demons can change their physical form at will, 2 Cor. 11:14-15 seems to suggest that they can, and holy angels appear to have that capacity (Heb. 13:2). The "aliens-are-really-demons-in-disguise" theory is probably the one most widely held by the Church.

Secret military testing, conspiracy or hoax. There are just too many people who suspect a government cover-up for it to be totally out of the question. But what is the government concealing – their own top secret technology, the "truth" about aliens, or a grand hoax? Someone or something is certainly going to a great deal of trouble to lead people to believe that we are being visited from outer space. Considering that many times the truth may be stranger than fiction, we would be amiss not to suggest the possibility of a massive conspiracy involving world leaders who are trying to manufacture a world-wide crisis capable of uniting the world for a common cause: Global governance. An "alien attack" would certainly distract people long enough to agree to surrender their rights for the good of the global community.

    The Nephilim

In Genesis 6, the Nephilim, an unnatural race of giants, are described as the offspring of a union between the "sons of God" (B'nai Elohim or Ben Elohim) and the "daughters of men." B'nai Elohim is a term that refers to angels and is translated "angels of God" in the ancient Septuagint. This unnatural mating of angels into the human family resulted in the Nephilim, which comes from the Hebrew word naphal (to fall), or the Fallen Ones. Some argue that "sons of God" refers to the line of Seth, and the "daughters of men" to Cain's line. This view is not scripturally defensible, and space for a thorough explanation of the subject is not permitted here. However, since every other usage of B'nai Elohim in the Old Testament refers to angels or the sons of God (Daniel 3:25, Job 2:1, Job 1:6, and Job 38:4-7), there is simply no valid reason for it to mean something different in Genesis 6.

Proponents of this theory believe that the wicked angels were trying to corrupt the genetic blood lineage that would ultimately produce the Savior, Jesus Christ, and render His future death on the cross in vain. This is thought to have been the reason for God's grieving which prompted the flood in an attempt to preserve His plan for redemption of mankind. Certainly the extreme nature of Gods judgment is difficult to explain for something as simple as the sins of the Cain lineage. In the blood corruption theory, apparently Noah's line was the only one not corrupted by this heinous sin, "Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations..." (Gen. 6:9 KJV)

Another scriptural passage that suggests the Nephilim were not ordinary humans, is found in Gen. 6:4, "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days [before the flood] and also afterward..." All animals and humans, with the exception of those on the ark, were wiped off the face of the earth during the flood, so how did they appear later unless they were something other than human? Upon escaping the Egyptians, the Israelites were afraid to go into the promised land of Canaan because "All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendents of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." (Numbers 13:32-33) Forty years later God clearly commands the Israelites to destroy every man, woman and child from certain tribes upon entering the land. Did He have the same "gene-pool" concerns that initiated the flood?

The Bible reveals that there were numerous strongholds of these giants in the early days of Israel (Deuteronomy 2:11, 20, 3:11, 13; and Joshua 12:4, 13:12, 15:8, 17:15, 18:16), and many early historians speak of the giants as fact, including Josephus Flavius in the first century. He has this to say in his book Antiquities of the Jews:

There were till then left the race of giants, who had bodies so large, and countenances so entirely different from other men, that they were surprising to the sight, and terrible to the hearing. The bones of these men are still shown to this very day, unlike to any credible relations of other men. (5.3.2; underlining added for emphasis)

    The Book of Enoch

While the Hebrew Book of Enoch is not canonized as part of the Bible, and should not be considered as an authentic word of God, it can be used as an outside historical reference that was generally accepted by many, if not most of the priests at the time of Christ. Although some say Jude is being sarcastic, Jude 14 quotes Enoch as a seemingly legitimate source. The Book of Enoch, if valid, greatly expands upon the few verses of Genesis 6:1-6. Enoch 6:1-7 states:

In those days, when the children of man had multiplied, it happened that there were born unto them handsome and beautiful daughters, and the angels, the children of heaven, saw them and desired them; and they said to one another, "Come, let us choose wives for ourselves from among the daughters of man and beget us children." ...And they were altogether two hundred; and they descended into Ardos, which is the summit of Hermon. And they called the mount, for they swore and bound one another by a curse.

And they took wives unto themselves, and everyone chose one woman for himself, and they began to go unto them. And they taught them magical medicine, incantations, the cutting of roots, and taught them about plants. And the women became pregnant and gave birth to great giants whose heights were three hundred cubits. These giants consumed the produce of all the people until the people detested feeding them. So the giants turned against [the people] in order to eat them. And they began to sin against birds, wild beasts, reptiles, and fish. And their flesh was devoured the one by the other and they drank blood. (Enoch 7:1-6)

The Nephilim theory maintains that since they were neither fully human nor fully spirit, when their bodies died during the flood, there was no place for their spirits to go and they became the demons or evil spirits of the Bible differing from fallen angels in the fact that demons (Nephilim spirits) seek embodiment in humans. The Book of Enoch says:

[Why have] you abandoned the high, holy, and eternal heaven, and slept with women and defiled yourselves with the daughters of the people, taking wives, acting like the children of the earth, and begetting giant sons? ...But now the giants who are born from the union of the spirits and the flesh shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, because their dwelling shall be upon the earth and inside the earth. Evil spirits have come out of their bodies.... They will become evil upon the earth and shall be called evil spirits.... The spirits of the giants oppress each other; they will corrupt, fall, be excited, and fall upon the earth, and cause sorrow. They eat no food, nor become thirsty, nor find obstacles. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of the people and against the women, because they have proceeded forth from them. (Enoch 15:3-12; underlining added for emphasis)

The Book of Enoch also explains how long this curse will continue on the spirits of the Nephilim and human beings:

From the days of the slaughter and destruction, and the death of the giants and the spiritual beings of the spirit, and the flesh, from which they have proceeded forth, which will corrupt without incurring judgment, they will corrupt until the day of the great conclusion, until the great age is consummated, until everything is concluded..."

The Testament of Solomon is another Hebrew text that has never been cannonized. While it is thought that the Book of Enoch was written about 300 BC, the Testament of Solomon is written in Greek and is believed to have been penned about 100 AD. Although its authenticity is even far more suspect than Enoch, it does have one passage that could shed some light on the future, if true:

I [Solomon] commanded another demon be brought to me, and he [Beelzeboul] brought me the evil demon Asmodeus, bound. I asked him, "who are you?" He scowled at me and said, "and who are you?" I said to him, "you dare to answer so arrogantly when you have been punished like this?" He continued to give forth the same look and said to me, "how should I answer you? You are the son of a man, but although I was born of a human mother, I am the son of an angel, it is impossible for one of heavenly origin to speak an arrogant word to one of the earthly origin.... You have us to torture for a little while; then we shall disperse among human beings again with the result that we shall be worshipped as gods because men do not know the names of the angels who rule over us." (Introduction to Testament of Solomon, underlining added for emphasis)

That makes a definite distinction between demons and fallen angels. It is possible that the angels who committed fornication with women in Genesis 6 are the same ones who are now chained and awaiting judgment in 2 Pet. 2:4, and 1 Pet. 3:19-20 "...through who also he [Jesus] went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the day of Noah while the ark was being built." Jude 6-7 says "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh..." (KJV, underlining added)

There is an ongoing debate about whether or not angels can even have intercourse, but the Bible doesn't say that they are incapable of it, only that they do not marry (Mark 12:25). Angels are not referred to as "its" in scripture, but as "sons of God." If they are able to take on human form, one can surmise that in a fallen state, sex might be a possibility for them, too.

People who have been "abducted" by aliens, claim that the beings have an intense fascination about studying the human reproduction system, and seem to be trying to create a human-alien hybrid. "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." (Matt. 24:37) Are we seeing a repeat of the angelic antics that precipitated the flood? If aliens are really evil spirits, what is their purpose in carrying on this enormous hoax for so many years?

    Alien agenda

All of their agendas have a common denominator: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy..." (John 10:10), and the means to accomplish this feat is deception. Enoch gives the account of a typical class of Deception 101 in the Nephilim school of "higher learning":

Amasras' taught incantation and the cutting of roots; and Armaros the resolving of incantations; and Baraqiyal astrology, and Kokarer'el' [the knowledge of] the signs, and Tam'el taught the seeing of the stars, and Asder'el taught the course of the moon as well as the deception of man. (Enoch 8:2-4; underline added for emphasis)

Coming between God and his highest creation is what drives these demonic spirits, and the host of tools in their arsenal runs deep: Cast doubt on the Bible, present alternate ways of salvation, discredit Jesus' deity, foster an interest in the occult and even appear to be angels of light (1 Cor. 11:13) – bringing a message of hope which is designed to deceive people into the pit of hell. Jesus warns in Matthew 24:24 that in the last days there will be many false Christs and prophets which will "appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect – if that were possible." Could these false Christs be demons, perhaps even fallen angels appearing as alien gods, claiming to be the Messiah?

The Nephilim theory seems to be the ideal solution that could tie together all end-time prophecies. The question that looms on every analyst's mind is how are the globalists going to get the people of the world, especially Americans, to accept the UN as a world government? Even the most avid liberal would run from such an idea. Likewise, how are they going to fool the Christians, who should be on their guard against this effort? The Nephilim/alien theory provides the perfect answer.

Most people are now ready to accept these kindly beings as saviors to fix the world's seemingly unsolvable problems. To do this, it would be only natural that the aliens would insist that the world come together under a common government. Ironically, this idea is supported by Corso who believed that "the civilian intelligence agencies" involved in the Roswell project, led by the CIA, had a blueprint for a "world order based upon an international government..." Since many Christians are Bible illiterate, they would likely join the rest of the world in welcoming the miracle-producing benevolent visitors thus becoming perfect pawns to assist in advancing this global agenda. Jesus said that in the last days there will be a great and bitter falling away from the faith: "At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people." (Mat. 24:10-11)

Although there is a lot of circumstantial evidence to support it, the Nephilim theory cannot be proven. Most end-time prophecies can be fulfilled in other, more readily-accepted ways as well. Nonetheless, something is happening out there. "Aliens" have been seen too many times by too many credible people to be just mass hysteria, and it is difficult to imagine that some sort of alien deception will not play a significant factor in the end times, orchestrated by Satan himself. Rather than being "enlightened" from the message of these visitors, we may find that they are drawing us ever further into the shadows.

Christians need to "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." (Eph. 6:11)  We must arm ourselves with knowledge of God's Word as a safeguard against deception. If not, we may wake up one morning to screaming headlines: UFOs ARE REAL – ALIENS HERE TO HELP HUMANITY!, and find ourselves being sucked in to the greatest deception in the history of mankind, fulfilling 2 Thessalonians 2:9, "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders."

Regardless of what you believe, keep this in mind, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God..." (I John 4:1), because in the last days many will be led astray. Don't fall into that trap, because what you don't know can hurt you. V  bm and mc  TOP
