| Delegates to the NEA Convention
arrogantly postponed voting on a resolution to develop homosexual
class materials for schools. They will be back! |
Move over reading, writing, and arithmetic. The
Representative Assembly of the National Education Association (NEA) held
its 139th meeting at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 2-7. The
teacher's union, which drew 10,000 delegates representing 2.6 million
members, carries considerable political clout. When the NEA talks, people
listen. And what they are talking about is their proposed homosexual
resolution designed to "advocate development of programs that
address the needs of homosexual, bisexual and transgender students"
and require homosexual educators to be involved in the development of
curriculum and lessons on the heritage, culture and history of these
alternative lifestyles.
A mountain of controversy and protests surrounded the
gathering, and the resolution was withdrawn before they could come to any
consensus. But don't celebrate just yet – the
pressure to drop the resolution came not from the protestors, but from the
Gay and Lesbian Caucus, which is calling for the establishment of a task
force to look deeper into the issues. An NEA news release spells out their
plans: "...in no way is NEA backing away from dealing with the
important issues raised by the proposed Resolution. Those who are
attempting to interpret the creation of a task force in this manner could
not be any further from the truth. We will not allow our policy or our
discussions to be dictated by any outside group, particularly those that
wish to demagogue on the issue instead of focusing on the needs and
problems of these students and educational employees. Far from backing
away from these issues, this task force will expand the scope of the
inquiry."
For those of you who are not fluent in the language of
"liberal-ese," this handy translation should assist you:
"Don't kid yourselves. The NEA won't be kowtowed by anyone's petty
prejudices, especially from Christians, and your protests have no affect
on our policies because we don't really care what the conservative public
wants as long as we are politically correct. As a matter of fact, we are
going to double our efforts to pander to the gay community." One
protester correctly stated that the resolution "provides for a
radical social agenda that the vast majority of American people do not
support." We can only imagine schools where the needs and rights of
Christian students could be elevated to such a degree, but we must be
prepared for schools that stifle religious freedom while promoting
pro-homosexual awareness. God is out; gay is in. V
